Star Trek: Picard – Season 2, Episode 10: “Farewell”

Synopsis: Tallinn sacrifices herself to save Renée Picard on Earth in 2024 and Admiral Picard returns to the present time to work with the Borg to save the galaxy.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of Carl (C. G.) Jung’s theory of how the conscious ego identifies with the savior archetype.

In “Farewell” when Tallinn and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard return to the launch site of the Europa Mission, Tallinn masquerades as Renée Picard and is killed by Dr. Adam Soong. Q then agrees to return Admiral Picard and the rest of the crew to the time period they initially came from. However, Captain Cristóbal Rios decides he will stay behind in with Dr. Teresa Ramirez and her son. Once Admiral Picard, Seven of Nine and Commander Raffi Musiker return to where and when they began, they are confronted by the Borg Queen, who four hundred years later has adopted Dr. Agnes Jurati’s values, and she works with the Starfleet vessels to prevent a cosmic event from harming life on Earth.

In this episode there are several examples of the conscious ego identifying with the power of the savior archetype. Tallinn knows that she must sacrifice her life to save that of Renée Picard. Q offering as his final act to return Admiral Picard, Seven of Nine, and Musiker to their former time line. And Admiral Picard understanding that he is the one who has the knowledge of who the Borg Queen really is, to allow the Borg and Starfleet to work together to prevent a disaster. And while it can be dangerous if the conscious ego identifies too long or too greatly with this archetypal energy, just as it is necessary for the actions in this episode, it is also the required impetus to start the process of what Jung called individuation, the process by which the conscious ego becomes stronger and the psyche more whole.
