Synopsis: Cadet Caleb Mir’s journey to find his mother resulted in unexpected complications.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of Carl Gustav (C.G.) Jung’s concept of projection, how one’s complex can be projected onto another.
“300th Night” was set at the official end of the first academic year of Starfleet Academy. The U.S.S. Athena was enroute to Betazed to rendezvous with the Federation Fleet for the dedication of the new seat of government. Cadet Jay-Den Kraag performed a bonding ritual with the cadets, to embrace his new chosen family and invite them to become members of House Kraag. Meanwhile, Fleet Admiral Charles Vance sent a message to Chancellor Nahla Ake and Chancellor Kelrc, informing them that Nus Braka stole Omega 47 weapons as well as time delayed targeting devices, meaning he has Omega 47 mines. Later, Cadet Caleb Mir listened to the messages that his mother sent him. She told him to go to the marketplace on Ukeck to find her. Mir was in the process of stealing a shuttle when Cadet SAM appeared. She told him that he needed her to get to Ukeck. Cadet Genesis Lythe came aboard with Cadet Darem Reymi. When Lythe tried to leave, Mir kidnapped her to keep her from informing Ake of their actions. However, after they discovered what happened, Kraag and Cadet Tarima Sadal told her instead. Ake alerted Vance that the cadets were on Ukeck. Vance told her Ukeck was about to be annexed by the Venari Ral.
On Ukeck, the cadets arrived and went to the marketplace. Reymi, Sadal, and SAM went to look for parts to repair the shuttle. Mir went to try to find his mother, Anisha Mir. He found her and told her that Nus Braka talked about her and Goja V. She told Caleb Mir that fourteen years into her sentence Braka contacted her. The other cadets join them. Mir’s mother gave the cadets the part they needed to repair the shuttle. Then they heard an announcement that the Venari Ral were going to take over the planet and that foreigners have one hour to leave. Caleb Mir told the others that he was going to go with his mother, but that they needed to leave. He told them that he never needed the academy or them. He called Reymi a clown prince and told Lythe that she was inherently selfish and insecure. Lythe told Caleb Mir that he tells himself that he is the smartest guy in the room, but that he is committed to remaining a messed up kid. Venari Ral found the cadets. They fought the Venari Ral with Anisha Mir alongside them. Anisha Mir was injured. The Athena, which Ake had ordered to Ukeck, appeared overhead, and transported the cadets and Anisha Mir aboard. The Athena was surrounded by Venari Ral vessels. Sensors detected more Omega 47 mines. The mines surrounded Federation space. Ake realized that they are the only ship outside the mines that Braka put around the Federation.
In this episode, when Caleb Mir told Reymi that he was a clown prince and Lythe that she was inherently selfish and insecure, and Lythe responded by telling him he tells himself that he is the smartest person in the room, but committed to remaining a messed up kid, they were both projecting their complexes onto the other. Jung taught that once individuals realized that they were projecting their complexes onto another individual, then that unconscious material could be acknowledged by the conscious ego and integrated into it, for the ego to become stronger and the psyche more whole.
