Synopsis: Lt. Commander Worf helps an aging Klingon warrior take part in one last great battle.

This episode can be seen as both an illustration of James Hillman’s acorn theory, that just as an acorn has everything inside it to become a tree, we all have an inner daimon that has all the information we need to become who we are meant to be, as well as Carl (C. G.) Jung’s theory that we all carry the beliefs and experiences of our ancestors with us in our psyches.

In “Once More into the Breach” the legendary Darah master Kor comes to see Lt. Commander Worf on Deep Space Nine. He asks him to help him have one last great adventure so that he can die a warrior. Worf approaches General Martok, who refuses to help Kor because of a grudge he holds against him for preventing him from attending officer training. But Worf tells him that he has already made him an officer and Kor is given the commission of third officer aboard Martok’s ship, the Ch’Tang. When Kor boards the vessel, many of the crew are in awe of the legendary fighter, which further annoys Martok. Then, after the Ch’Tang is hit by enemy fire and both Martok and Worf are injured and temporarily knocked unconscious, Kor takes command which leads to a great victory. However, in so doing, Kor speaks as if he is fighting in a distant war and the crew realizes he isn’t all there. The crew of the Ch’Tang ridicules him after this. But then the ship is threatened again, and Kor leads a suicide mission which saves the Ch’Tang and allows him to die a warriors death.

In this episode, Kor, like many Klingons who have a warrior’s soul, has become a Dahar master by listening to his inner daimon. He is a great fighter, and when put in command of a vessel he will fight aggressively and with cunning. When the time comes, he uses his mastery of combat to die the death that he chooses, saving the others, so they can continue the war. His fighting spirit comes partly from his inner daimon, but I also believe that it comes from his ancestors. A house of warriors in the Klingon Empire.
