Synopsis: The Star Trek Scouts return a baby Denebian slimevark to its mother.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of how an individual’s psyche is made up of both conscious and unconscious material, and that when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of unconscious material into itself, psychic healing can occur.
“Star Trek Scouts Save a Baby Animal – Holodeck Rescues #1” began with JR spinning a wheel in the form of a circular display screen to see what holodeck rescue mission the Star Trek Scouts will go on. Roo announced that the display screen indicated that a baby animal was trapped on a cliff and separated from his mother.
The Star Trek Scouts entered the holodeck program and Roo identified the baby animal as a Denebian slimevark from the Deneb Star System. The Star Trek Scouts observed that a lava flow was heading toward the cliff that the baby Denebian slimevark was trapped on. JR used rocket boots to reach the baby Denebian slimevark, but it was frightened by JR. Roo did some research and discovered that Denebian slimevarks like Andorian giant blueberries. Sprocket used his replicator to create an Andorian giant blueberry and sent it to JR. JR gave the Andorian giant blueberry to the baby Denebian slimevark to earn its trust and JR returned the baby Denebian slimevark to its mother.
In this episode, when JR reached the cliff where the baby Denebian slimevark was located, he rationally thought that the baby Denebian slimevark would understand that he was trying to help it return to its mother. However, to the baby Denebian slimevark JR appeared as an unfamiliar entity, something that it should fear. Fear, being an emotion, is a bit of unconscious material. When JR gave the baby Denebian slimevark an Andorian giant blueberry, something that Denebian slimevark understand to be pleasant, JR was able to gain the trust of the baby Denebian slimevark, so that he could return it to its mother. In order to save the baby Denebian slimevark, JR needed to not only use rational thinking, but he also had to appeal to the baby Denebian slimevark’s unconscious emotions. This can be analogized to how in an individual’s psyche the conscious ego needs to acknowledge and integrate bits of unconscious material into itself to become stronger and make the psyche more whole.
