Synopsis: Starfleet Academy cadets learn about themselves during a school holiday.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of Carl Gustav (C.G.) Jung’s concept of a complex, one way in which unconscious material comes to the awareness of the conscious ego.
“Ko’Zeine” began with the various Starfleet Academy cadets preparing to leave school for the All-Worlds Day holiday break. However, Cadet Caleb Mir did not want to leave. He asked Chancellor Nahla Ake for permission to remain at the academy during the break. Meanwhile, Jay-Den Kraag saw what he believed to be a kidnapping of Darem Reymi. Kraag followed Reymi and found himself on the matrimonial moon in the Khionian Realm. Reymi explained to Kraag that although this sudden wedding was a surprise, he has been engaged to Kaira, a member of Khionia’s royal family, since they were children. Kaira explained to Reymi that although their plan had been to wait six more years to be sealed, that her parents decided to abdicate early, which is why she had him brought to her. Reymi introduced Kraag as his Ko’Zeine, or best man. After the wedding ceremony Kraag gave his toast and spoke about how Reymi had saved not only himself but everyone aboard the U.S.S. Athena. Kaira then accused Reymi of starting their life together with a lie, because she did not know the individual that Kraag had described. She told him to abdicate and that she would rule Khionia without him.
Back at Starfleet Academy, Lythe snuck back to school and found Mir. She told him that she wanted him to help her hack her way onto the bridge so that she could sit in the captain’s chair. They were successful and Lythe sat in the captain’s chair and took a programable key from its console. Commander Jett Reno caught them, and Ake was brought back to the academy early to speak with them. Lythe told Ake that she took the key because she wanted to change her letters of reference. That she had altered them because they all indicated that she was driven out of fear. Ake told Lythe that the letters did her a favor, they identified a target for Lythe, and that we are all wildly flawed.
In this episode, when Ake told Lythe that the letters of recommendation that pointed out her weakness had identified a target for her, this can be compared to how Jung described how the conscious ego becomes aware of unconscious material through a complex. Jung believed that a complex was not a negative thing, as common parlance refers to it, but a learning opportunity. And if an individual allows their conscious ego to become aware of unconscious material through a complex, then the ego will become stronger and the psyche more whole.
