Star Trek: Enterprise Season 1, Episode 4: “Strange New World”

Synopsis: An away team is sent to survey an Earth-like planet with unusual properties.

This episode illustrates what can happen when the Logos-driven rational conscious ego encounters the Eros-driven irrational unconscious.

In “Strange New World” Enterprise encounters an Earth-like planet and Captain Jonathan Archer sends an away team to survey it, ignoring Sub-Commander T’Pol’s recommendation to send an automated probe first to determine it is safe. When the away team land on the planet, it seems idyllic. So much so, that when Commander Charles Tucker III (Trip) and Ensign Travis Mayweather hear that a survey team is staying overnight, they want to stay too, to camp out. What they do not know is that on the planet the pollen carries a substance that contains hallucinogenic properties. This causes an almost fatal confrontation between Trip and T’Pol, pointing phases at each other, until an antidote to the hallucinogen is beamed down from the ship. In this episode, when Archer decides to recklessly go down to survey the planet, he is exhibiting the traits of a conscious ego that delves into the realm of the unconscious without anticipating the dangers it might encounter there. And while acknowledging and integrating bits of unconscious material into itself will make the ego stronger and the psyche more whole, this is also something to be done with care and with caution, as the unconscious is by definition unknown.
