Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Season 1, Episode 2: “Beta Test”

Synopsis: A delegation from Betazed visits the campus shared by Starfleet Academy and the War Academy.

This episode can be seen as elucidating how bits of unconscious material that Carl (C. G.) Jung identifies as complexes, come to the awareness of the conscious ego through projection. Projection being when an individual projects their own complex onto another individual.

In “Beta Test” Chancellor Nahla Ake addressed the cadets as the fall semester began. Caleb Mir was seen beginning his classes and then trying to climb a wall to escape the Academy. This was witnessed by Tarima Sadal, part of the visiting Betazed Youth Delegation, and daughter of President Emerin Sadal. She did not tell Mir who she was, but asked him why he was trying to escape, noting that he was literally sitting on a fence. He asked why she was there, and she told him that she wanted to see a humpback whale because they were big and didn’t care about you. Later, President Sadal and the Betazed Youth Delegation make their entrance into the academy. President Sadal tells Admiral Charles Vance that Betazed does not trust the Federation, and that it seems nothing has changed. Tarima Sadal asked for Mir to be her guide when she toured the academy, and that night Mir took here where she could see a humpback whale. The two  were discovered by Ake, Vance, and President Sadal. Afterward, President Sadal was convinced to return to the bargaining table once more by his daughter. Understanding that President Sadal does not trust the Federation, Vance proposed that the new seat of Federation government be built on Betazed. A deal was made.

In this episode, different characters project their own unconscious complexes onto others. An example of this is when Tamira Sadal projected her longing to see what is outside the wall of Betazed onto Mir, when she saw him trying to climb a fence to escape Starfleet Academy. Once she realized that she was doing this, she saw Mir for who he was. But more importantly, she understood her own complex, and she took action by enrolling into the War College. This can be compared to when an individual first projects their complex onto another and then removes it, allowing an individual to acknowledge and integrate the unconscious complex into ones ego, making the ego stronger and the psyche more whole.
