Star Trek: Khan – Season 1, Episode 8: “Original Sin”

Synopsis: Khan surprises the Elboreans with his decision concerning the rescue mission and then learns the true origin of Ceti Alpha V’s peril.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of Carl (C. G.) Jung’s theory concerning how individuals project their own unconscious material onto other individual, and that how when these projections are removed, the projector can see the projectee for who they really are.

In “Original Sin,” on the U.S.S. Excelsior, Dr. Rosalind Lear recorded in her historian’s log that in the five years between the death of Marla McGivers and the intended launch of the rescue ship that log entries were inconsistent at best. However, she gleaned that the alliance between Khan’s people and the Elboreans held after Ivan’s banishment and that the relations between them improved. Construction of the rescue ship was finished ahead of schedule and that everyone, except for Kali, was surviving on subsistence rations. Also that Kali, at the age of five, showed development of a child twice her age.

In the past on Ceti Alpha V, Madot, who cared for Kali after her mother died, was the ones continuing to make the logs. Khan and Delmonda gathered all those who were physically able to come to gather the night before the launch of the rescue ship. Khan announced that the name of the rescue ship as the Venture and that her crew would seek help from anyone except Starfleet. Khan named the Venture crew: Joachim, Kamora, Khan – who will lead them, and Kali. Delmonda told Khan that this was not what they had agreed to. Khan told Delmonda that he hadn’t lied, he had withheld information from him. Delmonda said that Khan and his people were driven from Earth and that they would have bonded over shared experiences. That they were all one. Delmonda said that there is no acceptance in the absence of the truth. Delmonda accessed Khan’s mind. It was revealed to Khan that the Elboreans destroyed Ceti Alpha VI and caused the destruction of Ceti Alpha V.

In this episode when Delmonda accessed Khan’s mind and revealed the truth to him, this can be compared to when an individual stops projecting bits of their own unconscious onto another. Here, this resulted in Khan learning that the Elboreans were the cause of the destruction on Ceti Alpha VI and the peril to Ceti Alpha V. In the psyche, once an individual stops projecting bits of unconscious material onto another, that other person can be seen for who they really are. At the same time, the knowledge that one has been projecting unconscious material onto another allows for self-knowledge and psychic healing in the individual who was doing the projecting.
