Synopsis: Marla McGivers’ logs provided information on how in the past Khan and his people worked to find the weaknesses of the Elboreans, while in the present day on the U. S. S. Excalibur, Captain Sulu was suspicious of Dr. Lear’s work.
This episode can be seen as illustrations of Carl (C. G.) Jung’s concept of a complex, here, cultural complexes, that once identified can lead to psychic healing.
In “The Good of All,” on the U. S. S. Excelsior, Captain Hikaru Sulu spoke with Ensign Tuvok. He wanted him to spy on Dr. Rosalind Lear. Sulu was suspicious of her work because he perceived Khan as evil. He shared with Tuvok his thoughts about evil:
The problem with evil isn’t that we don’t understand it. It’s that the practice of it is incompatible with the peace and happiness of all other living things. If your happiness depends upon the suffering of others, if peaceful coexistence through painful compromise is an unacceptable outcome, there is simply no place for you in a civilized society. (Beyer et al., 2025, 1:39).
In Marla McGiver’s logs, she revealed how in the past on Ceti Alpha V, Delmonda and Khan met, and Delmonda told Khan that his people would not contact their homeworld for help. The Elboreans left their planet to form a new world, to evolve toward a more perfect state. Which Delmonda also perceived as Khan’s goal. Delmonda tried to explain to Khan his people’s concept of “panda” as a collection of minds in harmony. However, panda was governed by all; whereas Khan was the leader of his people. Delmonda asked how Khan can give fear so much space in his mind. Khan told him he needed it to survive. Later, Ivan was sent out to discover a way to kill the Elboreans. Ivan found a single Elborean alone, attacked and killed him. McGivers, who was left alone in a cave, came across Delmonda. Delmonda offered to guide her through the caves. He led her to the Elborean base where the Elboreans had taken Ivan. Ivan was in a trance after he killed the Elborean, Sakanda, in cold blood.
Back on the U.S.S. Excelsior, Lear revealed to Tuvok that the source of the logs of McGivers that she originally received was Delmonda.
In this episode, there are at least three examples of cultural complexes. One is Sulu’s understanding of evil. The second was the Elboreans’ feelings about their home planet. And the third was Khan’s concepts around the purpose of his people. Sulu indicated to Tuvok why he was distrustful of Khan and tried to justify his ideology as being the natural order of things. This can also be said for how Delmonda explained to Khan why his people left their home world and Khan’s own view of the destiny of his people.
Similar to how a complex can cause an individual to act in ways that do not appear rational, because an unconscious fragment of the psyche is controlling one’s thoughts and actions, the same thing can be the case for an entire society. But when an individual becomes aware of one’s complexes they become conscious, and psychic healing can occur. Similarly, if a society can be made aware that their perspective is just one possible understanding of the world, then the world moves closer to healing.
