Star Trek: Khan – Season 1, Episode 5: “Imagination’s Limits”

Synopsis: An alien vessel crash lands on Ceti Alpha V.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of Carl (C. G.) Jung’s concept of a complex, a hidden bit of feeling-toned psychic content that the conscious ego has no control over.

In “Imagination’s Limits” an alien vessel landed on Ceti Alpha V after the explosion of Ceti Alpha VI. When Khan’s people observed the aliens, they noted that the aliens were silent. Marla McGivers told Khan that this could mean that the aliens might be telepaths and she hoped they also might be able to help them. Khan instead ordered that his people attack the aliens. The aliens were telepathic. Using their thoughts they had the ability to melt the weapons that Khan’s people had planned to use against them. The alien leader, Delmonda, introduced himself to Khan, told him that they were Elboreans, and that they had no intention of fighting against Khan and the other settlers. Instead, Delmonda implanted in Khan’s mind the location of underground water on the planet. Khan’s people found the water, but Khan did not understand why the Elboreans provided him the information which caused him to fear them.

In this episode, when McGivers had hoped that the Elboreans might be able to help Khan’s people, and in fact they did, but that Khan could not see them as anything but a threat, can be compared to when an individual is in the throes of a complex. Khan could not get past his mistrust of the Elboreans because he does not understand their motivations. This can be analogized to how a complex can cause an individual to act in ways that do not appear rational, because an unconscious fragment of the psyche is controlling one’s thoughts and actions, But when an individual becomes aware of one’s complexes they become conscious, and psychic healing can occur.
