Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 5, Episode 1: “Dos Cerritos”

Synopsis: D’Vana Tendi pays her debt to her sister while the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos meet their parallel selves.

This episode can be seen as illustrations of James Hillman’s acorn theory—that just as an acorn has everything inside it to become an oak tree, we all have inner daimons with all the information we need to become who we are meant to be.

In “Dos Cerritos,” on Orion, D’Vana Tendi is told that she will fulfill her promise to her sister, if she takes her crew to recover an Orion warship on Alva IV. Tendi does so, but she does it in her own way—telling her crew that she does not want to hurt anyone. The crew then expresses their dreams, and Tendi tells them that she will help them achieve them, if they stop killing people. They do, and the ship is recovered. Meanwhile, the U.S.S. Cerritos falls into a quantum fissure temporal rift that has them confronting a parallel Cerritos and crew. However, the parallel Cerritos is captained by Beckett Mariner, who tries to take the place of our Lt. Becket Mariner, so that she can be a happy loose cannon again. The imposter is discovered and sent back to her ship and the Cerritos returns to its universe.

In this episode, Tendi’s crew, as well as parallel Mariner, want to follow their dreams, which can be analogized to the acorn theory, in that we all have inner daimons with all the information we need to become who we are meant to be. For Tendi’s crew, one wants to be a baker, one wants to be a dancer, and one wants to teach ethics at Orion University. For parallel Mariner, when she meets her parallel counterpart, she realizes that she has lost that which made her unique. They all realize that they have strayed from the wisdom of their inner daimons and want to re-align themselves with that which makes them special. This is a powerful lesson for all of us. Sometimes situations lead us from straying from our own inner wisdom, which can cause us despair. But when we feel that we are in tune with our own inner wisdom, we feel fulfilled and hopeful.
