Synopsis: Infinity and her crew utilize a Borg transwarp conduit in their efforts to rescue Captain Chakotay and the Protostar.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of how the unconscious has different ways of communicating than the conscious ego.
In “The Fast and the Curious,” while Infinity makes its way to the spiral nebula where the crew believes Captain Chakotay and the Protostar are located, Rok-Tahk discovers a Borg transwarp conduit. Although the crew knows using Borg technology may be dangerous, the crew decides that the amount of time that they will save by using it is worth the risk. Infinity enters the conduit only to be forced down by a drone to land on a planet where the crew is captured by Kazons. In order to earn their freedom, the crew must win a race that the Kazons use to hone their piloting skills. Dal R’El, Jankom-Pog, Gwyndala (Gwyn), and Rok-Tahk participate in the race, while Fugitive Zero and Murf are taken to the control center of the planet. Fugitive Zero and Murf learn that an artificial intelligence controls the planet and is what scours the transwarp conduit for those that can train the planet’s pilots to improve. After the race is completed, there is a scuffle and Fugitive Zero saves the Infinity crew, but their containment suit is now damaged.
In this episode, the way that the transwarp conduit is able to make objects travel through space more quickly, can be compared to how bits of unconscious material, such as instincts and emotions, are able to react more quickly to stimuli than the rational conscious ego. Additionally, just as there are both risks and benefits to using the conduit, acknowledging and integrating bits of unconscious material into the conscious ego, is not possible without the ego becoming vulnerable to past wounds and complexes. But when the choice is made to continue this path, the ego becomes stronger and the psyche more whole.
