Star Trek: Prodigy – Season 2, Episode 3: “Who Saves the Saviors?”

Synopsis: Infinity crash lands on Solum of the future while Gwyndala is challenged in Solum of the present.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of James Hillman’s concept of the relationship between the puer, or eternal youth archetype, and that of the senex, or wise elder.

In “Who Saves the Saviors,” Infinity crash lands onto Solum of the future, where her crew is placed in a cell along with Captain Chakotay and his first officer, Adreek-Hu. Not wanting to alter the timeline, Fugitive Zero lies Chakotay about their true identity. Jankom Pog is able to disable the forcefield that is keeping them captive. Chakotay and Adreek-Hu board Protostar and launch, but it is too soon. Meanwhile, on Solum in the present, Gwyndala (Gwyn) invokes Va’Lu’Rah, the right of challenge, to Asencia’s claims against her as not being a true Vau N’Akat. When Asencia gets the better of her in the battle, Gwyn tells her that she doesn’t need to fight Asencia, just leave her behind, as Gwyn climbs out of the cavern where the challenge is being held. But Asencia catches up to Gwyn, surprises her, and knocks her back to the floor of the cavern. Asencia is then hailed as the true Vau N’Akat for the future.

In this episode, when Gwyn proclaims that she doesn’t need to fight Asencia, just leave her behind, this can be analogized to how the puer, or eternal youth archetype, rebels against the senex, or wise elder archetype, in the human psyche. Here, since the rules of engagement were not working in Gwyn’s favor, she chose to create new rules. This can be compared to the puer needing to break the status quo that the senex has provided in order to create something new and different in the future. Hillman believed that the relationship between these two archetypes could be used to understand the relationship between all the other archetypes found in the human psyche.
