Star Trek: Picard – Season 3, Episode 8: “Surrender”

Synopsis: Captain Vadic and her crew briefly take over control of the U.S.S. Titan, but through the awakening of the Data personality in the Daystrom Android M-5-10 body, the crew of the Titan are able to regain control of the ship and destroy the Shrike.

This episode gives an illustration of what Carl (C. G.) Jung called the union of opposites.

In “Surrender,” on U.S.S. Titan, Captain Vadic has taken control of the bridge and torments the Titan’s crew by shutting down the ship’s systems. Meanwhile, aboard the Shrike, Captain William T. Riker and Commander Deanna Troi finally talk about how they each had a different way of dealing with the death of their son before Worf rescues them. On the Titan, Commodore Geordi La Forge is forced to remove the partition between the Data and Lore personalities in the Daystrom Android M-5-10 body. The Data personality prevails because in his positronic brain Data gives bits of his memory to Lore, because he reasoned that Lore would then also incorporate his feelings toward them in Lore’s personality, which would then cause Lore to begin thinking and feeling as he did. The Data personality now in the forefront of the Daystrom Android M-5-10 is then able to save the Titan from Vadic’s control, and the crew destroys her and the Shrike.

In this episode, the confrontation and eventual reconciliation between the Data and Lore personalities in the Daystrom Android M-5-10 can be analogized to the union of opposites, the conscious and the unconscious, in our psyches. Data, by giving Lore his mementos, understanding that Lore envied them, allowed Lore to incorporate Data’s feelings into himself. Once Lore did this, the psyche for the Daystrom Android M-5-10 became more whole. Because this is Star Trek, this united psyche was represented by the Data personality instead of Lore’s, which came to the forefront and using his abilities was able to help save the ship.
