Star Trek: Picard – Season 3, Episode 7: “Dominion”

Synopsis: Captain Vadic and the crew of the Shrike find the U.S.S. Titan and take control of the ship.

This episode gives an illustration of a cultural complex—when an entire society feels the trauma of the same wound.

In “Dominion,” on U.S.S. Titan, Dr. Beverly Crusher and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard discuss how the uniqueness of the new Changelings could be used against them, but that this would mean genocide. The crew also learns that Captain Vadic has abducted Captain William T. Riker. Jack Crusher speaks with Picard and tells him maybe they should let Vadic find him, that he has always felt different, that something was wrong with him. Then Crusher tells him he hears voice and Picard devises a plan. The Shrike finds the Titan and takes a shuttle to board her. When Vadic and her crew arrive Jack greets them and then runs away. Vadic and her crew follow and they are trapped in force fields. While Vadic is contained in one of these force fields she explains to Picard and Dr. Crusher that she was kept at Daystrom Station as a specimen, part of Project Proteus—which was experimenting on Changelings, using them to create spies. She also tells them how the Changelings were not given the cure for the genocidal virus that Starfleet had used to infect them in the past, instead a Changeling had to steal it. Meanwhile, the Lore personality takes control of the activated Daystrom Android M-5-10, and lowers the force fields. Vadic escapes, and with her crew, take control of the bridge.

In this episode, Vadic explains the pain and suffering of the Changelings at the hand of Starfleet, and how it fueled their need for vengeance—to destroy Starfleet. The pain and suffering that the Changelings felt can be compared to any group that feels that it has been injured by the acts of another society. This type of shared psychic would is called a cultural complex.
