Star Trek: Picard – Season 3, Episode 5: “Imposters”

Synopsis: When the U.S.S. Titan and her crew enter the Alpha Quadrant, they are intercepted by the U.S.S. Intrepid and her crew.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of James Hillman’s acorn theory—that just as an acorn has everything inside it to become an oak tree, we have inner daimons with all the information we need to become who we are.

In “Imposters,” aboard the U.S.S. Titan, Captain Liam Shaw relieves Captain William T. Riker of command, and Commander Annika Hansen (Seven of Nine) is reinstated. Admiral Jean-Luc Picard says that when the ship reaches Starfleet, he wants to take responsibility for the situation he placed the vessel and her crew in. The Titan is hailed by the U.S.S. Intrepid, and Commander Ro Laren comes aboard to speak with Picard. They both admit that they were both heartbroken by the other because they felt that they were not seen for who they were. Ro tells Picard that Starfleet is compromised at the highest level by Changelings. Her shuttle is sabotaged and she sacrifices her life by crashing it into the Intrepid so that the Titan can escape. After that, Picard learns that she left a data chip with him that contains all the information she was able to obtain on the Changelings’ mission.

In this episode, when Ro trusts Picard and saves him as well as the Titan and her crew at the cost of her own life, she can be seen as embodying Hillman’s acorn theory. Ro followed her inner daimon to plot her course in life, even when individuals whom she cared deeply for could not understand. In this episode, she is seen for who she is and her greatest gift is that she followed her heart. This is also the case for those who listen to their inner daimons, to determine their own direction in their lives.
