Synopsis: When the best efforts of the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar fail to stop the unleashing of the Living Construct weapon, Gwyn reaches out to non-Starfleet vessels for assistance.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of the need for diversity in our society.
In “Supernova, Part 1,” the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar find the ship surrounded by Starfleet vessels, with the U.S.S. Dauntless firing upon her. Fugitive Zero is able to regain control of the ship, to try to flee, but Protostar’s shields fail and the crew prepares to be boarded. Ensign Asencia, The Diviner, and Drednok board Protostar. While Drednok captures the rest of the crew, Ensign Asencia fights Gwyn, mortally wounds The Diviner, and then activates the Living Construct. The Starfleet ships start firing on one another and Gwyn makes an impassioned plea to non-Starfleet vessels to come to their assistance. She pleas: “Because in the infinite of space, everyone needs to know there is a place out there willing to accept us all, no matter how different we think we are” (McNamara & Schmidt, 2022). Soon non-Starfleet vessel arrive to offer assistance.
In this episode, the plea that Gwyn makes to all species within communication range, that everyone needs a place that is willing to accept all of us, no matter how differently we are perceived, can be compared to neurodiverse individuals asking to be included in a neurodiverse world. Where neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals can live in mutual respect and acceptance. A world to hope for in the future through steps taken now towards that goal.
