Star Trek: Picard – Season 2, Episode 6: “Two of One”

Synopsis: The crew infiltrates a pre-mission gala to protect Renée Picard, and Admiral Picard is hit by a speeding car and knocked unconscious.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of how the conscious ego will try to suppress unconscious material.

In “Two of One” Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, Seven of Nine, Commander Raffi Musiker, Captain Cristóbal Rios, Dr. Agnes Jurati, and Tallinn are able to infiltrate the pre-mission gala with a little help from the Borg Queen. Once inside, Admiral Picard is able to speak with Renée Picard and convinces her not to quit the Europa Mission. However, when Admiral Picard and Renée Picard step outside the event space for a moment, Dr. Adam Soong tries to run down Renée Picard. Admiral Picard moves her aside and the car hits him instead. Admiral Picard is brought to the clinic run by Dr. Teresa Ramirez, where he lies unconscious. Tallinn tells the others that he is trapped in memories and that she believes that by helping him access them, that she can revive him. Musiker is opposed to this, telling Tallinn that Admiral Picard’s comatose state may be protecting him. Tallinn tells the others that just because something is protecting us does not mean that it is good for us. Meanwhile, Soong returns home to his daughter, Kore, telling her that she is his life’s work. This seems odd to Kore, and it prompts her to use Soong’s computer to investigate his work and finds that she is the last in a long line of genetically engineered individuals.

In this episode, when Tallin tells the others that just because something is protecting us does not mean that it is good for us, the thing that is protecting us can be compared to the conscious ego when it suppresses bits of unconscious material because it is too difficult to work with. However, by doing this the conscious ego is also preventing itself from growing stronger or to heal. Soong, by not letting Kore know that she has been genetically engineered, can also be seen as comparable to the conscious ego wanting to protect itself from the unconscious. But just as Kore learning her true origins may be initially painful, by learning the truth she will be able to better understand her place in the world. This can be compared to when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of unconscious material into itself, to become stronger and begins the process that will make the psyche more whole.
