Synopsis: Admiral Picard goes to find the Watcher while Seven of Nine and Commander Musiker try to locate Captain Rios.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of what can happen when the conscious ego acknowledges a bit of unconscious material.
In “Watcher,” Admiral Jean-Luc Picard travels to the coordinates that Dr. Agnes Jurati extracted from the Borg Queen, to find a young Guinan. When Picard reveals to Guinan that he knows her species, she decides to listen to him but is still suspicious. When he tells her his name is Picard she decides to help him locate the Watcher. Meanwhile, Seven of Nine and Commander Raffi Musiker try to locate Captain Cristóbal Rios.
In this episode, Picard can be seen as am embodiment of the conscious ego and Guinan the unconscious. When Picard tells Guinan that he knows who she is but not who he is, she does not trust him. This can be analogized to the conscious ego wanting to be in control of the unconscious. Yet, when Picard tells Guinan his name, giving her a little knowledge about him, she agrees to help him. This can be compared to when the ego allows itself to lose some of its control and recognize that unconscious material exists. The ego acknowledging bits of unconscious material and then integrating them into itself is what makes it stronger and the psyche more whole.
