Star Trek: Picard – Season 2, Episode 1: “The Star Gazer”

Synopsis: An alien species beyond a spacial anomaly contacts Starfleet to ask for Admiral Picard’s help to join the Federation.

This episode can be seen as illustration of Carl (C.G.) Jung’s description of how the conscious ego may choose to suppress unconscious material.

In “The Star Gazer,” on Earth, it is harvest time at Chateau Picard, and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard is being forced to confront feelings he would rather not deal with. Meanwhile, a spacial anomaly attacks a Starfleet vessel. Starfleet Fleet Admiral Sally Whitley contacts Picard, to ask for his assistance when an unknown alien species sent a message to him to help them join the Federation. Picard travels to the location of the anomaly where the U.S.S Stargazer, captained by Cristóbal Rios, has traveled. From out of the anomaly comes a Borg ship. The Borg Queen comes aboard the Stargazer and starts assimilating the ship. Picard orders that the ship self-destruct. There is an explosion. Picard finds himself back at the chateau with Q.

In this episode, Picard is confronted by memories and situations that bring up feelings that are difficult for him. But when Starfleet requests his assistance, he leaves the uncomfortable situation behind. This can be compared to how the conscious ego can behave when it comes into contact with unconscious material that is difficult for it to deal with and chooses to just suppress it. But the ego cannot suppress the unconscious material forever. When Q arrives on the scene he drastically changes Picard’s circumstance. This can be analogized to how when the ego suppresses unconscious material, it will come back to the purview of the ego in the form of a complex.
