Star Trek: Prodigy – Season 1 Episodes 9 and 10: “A Moral Star, Part 1 and Part 2”

Synopsis: After the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar receive a message from The Diviner that he will kill the Unwanted unless they return the ship to him, a deal is struck. But The Diviner changes the terms, double crosses everyone, and although the crew take back possession of the vessel, they are unaware that she contains a dark secret.

These episodes can be seen as an illustration of how James Hillman described the relationship between the Puer, or eternal youth, archetypal energy in our psyches and that of the Senex, or wise elder.

In “A Moral Star, Part 1 and Part 2” the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar receive a message from The Diviner telling them that unless they return the Protostar to him, he will kill all the Unwanted in the mines at Tars Lamora. The crew realize that they only have enough power to make one jump with the proto-warp core, either to the Federation or back to Tars Lamora, to save the Unwanted. They decide to go back to Tars Lamora with a plan. Once they arrive, The Diviner changes the terms, and tells them that Gwyn must come with them in exchange for The Diviner’s ship, the Rev-12 which the crew and the Unwanted will need to leave Tars Lamora. Gwyn agrees to go with The Diviner, but when they are aboard the Protostar he discovers that the proto-warp core is gone. The Diviner orders Protostar back to Tars Lamora and on the journey back he tells Gwyn the truth about where and when he comes from, what happened to their planet after the Federation made first contact with their race, and his plan to use the Protostar to deliver a system virus to Starfleet that will destroy it. When the Protostar returns to Tars Lamora the crew is able to take back the ship when the Medusan, Fugitive Zero, reveals its true self to The Diviner and he goes mad. Gwyn sees a reflection and is knocked unconscious. When she recovers, she has lost her memory of the information that The Diviner gave her and the Protostar heads to Federation space.

In this episode, the relationship between The Diviner and Gwyn can be analogized to that of the Puer, or eternal youth, archetype and that of the Senex, or wise elder. These are archetypal energies that we all have in our psyches. Hillman wrote that the balance between these two powers can be used to examine the relationship between all the other archetypes in our psyches, as there is an ongoing back and forth between them throughout our lives. Here, when the Puer archetype must break away from that of the Senex for the individual to become who they are meant to be. But over time the Puer energy will give way to the Senex when more structure and stability are required to develop into who the individual is meant to become.
