Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 4: “All is Possible”

Synopsis: Captain Burnham and Captain Saru are sent to Ni’Var to observe the forging of an agreement for Ni’Var to rejoin the Federation, while Lt. Tilly and Ensign Tal lead a group of Starfleet Academy cadets in a teambuilding exercise.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of James Hillman’s concept of the metaxy, that in between third space between the conscious ego and the unconscious where change is possible.

In “All is Possible” Captain Michael Burnham and Captain Saru are sent to observe what was set to be the rejoining of Ni’Var into the United Federation of Planets. However, once there, President T’Rina of Ni’Var adds an amendment to the agreement between Ni’Var and the Federation. An amendment that Laira Rillak, the President of the Federation, cannot agree to. Burnham speaks to Rillak and Saru speaks with T’Rina. Burnham realizes that for political reasons, neither leader can back down from their position nor give into the other’s demands, but that a compromise from a third party may be acceptable. Burnham suggests that an independent committee be created to address any tensions between the Ni’Var and the Federation, made up of representatives from both. This is acceptable. Meanwhile, the training mission that Lt. Sylvia Tilly is leading has turned into an exercise in survival. But once the cadets under her command work together in order to escape multiple threats, it turns out to be the teambuilding experience that was hoped for.

In this episode, Burnham and Saru, working as intermediators between the Rillak and T’Rina, can be seen as creating a third space, where compromise and change is possible. This can be compared to the metaxy, the third place between the conscious ego and the unconscious, where psychic change can occur.
