Synopsis: The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery is sent to investigate an enormous space anomaly.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of the creation of what Carl (C. G.) Jung described as a complex or psychic wound.
In “Anomaly” Captain Michael Burnham and the U.S.S. Discovery crew are sent to investigate the enormous space anomaly that destroyed the home planet of Cleveland (Book) Booker, Kwejian. When Discovery reaches the location of the anomaly it is too dangerous for the vessel to proceed, but Book tells Burnham that in spite of the loss that he just lived through he is ready for the mission to take his smaller ship closer to the anomaly to gather data. With the aid of Commander Paul Stamets, he achieves the objective but at great cost. Meanwhile, on Discovery, Lt. Sylvia Tilly admits to Dr. Hugh Culber, that things are not the same and she needs to talk to him professionally. When Book returns to Discovery, he also admits that all is not well.
In this episode, the painful feelings that Book and Tilly are experiencing can be seen as a psychic wound, which can create a complex. But Jung saw complexes, not as negative, but as an opportunity to gain self-knowledge. Book and Tilly admitting that all is not well is the first step in psychic healing that is made possible when a complex is acknowledged and worked with.
