Synopsis: The U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with aiding the U.S.S. Archimedes on a first contact mission.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of what can happen when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates fragments of unconscious material into itself.
In “First First Contact,” The U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with aiding an Excelsior-class starship, The U.S.S. Archimedes, on a first contact mission. Captain Sonya Gomez, the commander of the Archimedes tells Captain Carol Freeman that the plan is for the Archimedes to make the actual first contact alone, so as not to intimidate the Lapeerians, and that the Cerritos crew is initially to keep their ship outside the solar system. Then once first contact is made by the Archimedes, the Cerritos crew will assist in installing subspace transponders, and then join the other crew on the planet for a celebration. But when the Archimedes enters the Laap System, a solar flare hits the ship knocking out her systems. On the Cerritos, Ensign Samanthan Rutherford has a plan to rescue the Archimedes, but it will require the entire crew working together to remove the outer hull of the vessel in order to safely travel through the dangerous debris field to reach the Archimedes. The rescue is successful and the first contact mission completed.
In this episode, that the Cerritos crew has to remove the ships outer hull in order to reduce resistance and travel through a dangerous debris field can be analogous to how the ego needs to let go of its long held defense mechanisms in order for psychic healing to begin. When the ego does this and then acknowledges fragments of unconscious material in the psyche and integrate them into itself, then it becomes stronger and the individual more whole.
