Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 2, Episode 9: “Wej Duj”

Synopsis: The U.S.S. Cerritos is sent to the Kontaran system, and while the ship makes her way there the crew is given the day off.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of what can happen when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of unconscious material into itself.

In “Wej Duj,” Captain Carol Freeman gives the crew the day off as the U.S.S. Cerritos heads to a distant system. Ensign Bradward Boimler decides that he needs a bridge buddy and tries to ingratiate himself to various senior officers by pretending to share their interests. Meanwhile, on a Vulcan vessel, the V.C.G. Sh’vhal, T’lyn tells her fellow crew members that her instincts indicate that something is off, and she is mocked. However, she does report her feelings to her captain, who listens to her but also tells her that she needs to spend the next two days in meditation. At the same time, on a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, the I.K.S. Che’Ta,’ her captain, Dorg, is helping a Pakled named Rebner. Cerritos then enters the area where the Che’Ta’ and the Pakled ship are located, and they fire on her. Then the Sh’vhal also arrived, the captain having followed T’lyn’s gut feelings. The Sh’vhal is also fired upon by the Klingons and the Pakleds, but because T’lyn modified her ship’s shields, because she felt it was important to do so, the Vulcans disable the Pakled ship and the Klingon vessel retreats. Cerritos is saved and T’lyn is reprimanded and transferred to Starfleet.

In this episode, T’lyn can be seen as an individual who is following her gut instincts, even though it is frowned upon by her fellow Vulcans. We can analogize the Vulcans to a conscious ego that believes that its way of being is the only one and T’lyn to an ego that has acknowledged bits of unconscious material and integrated them into itself. By doing this, T’lyn saves not only her ship but the Cerritos as well. In our psyches, when this happens psychic healing can occur, making the ego stronger and the psyche more whole.
