Synopsis: Captain Freeman is tasked with trying to negotiate peace on the Pakled home world while a Pakled prisoner requests asylum aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos, where anomaly consolidation day duties are being carried out.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of what James Hillman called the acorn theory, that just as an acorn has everything inside it to become an oak tree, we all have inner daimons with all the information we need to become who we are meant to be.
In “The Spy Humongous,” Captain Carol Freeman has been tasked with negotiating peace on the Pakled home world. Meanwhile, aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos, Ensigns Beckett Mariner, D’Vana Tendi, Samanthan Rutherford, and Bradward Boimler are assigned to anomaly consolidation duty. But because of his time spent aboard the U.S.S. Titan, a group of ensigns that call themselves the Redshirts, because of their intent to get promoted, invite Boimler to join their club. They relieve Boimler of anomaly consolidation duties and give him a makeover, which makes him appear more like them. However, when Tendi is transformed into a giant scorpion-like creature by one of the anomalies, Boimler rescues her by performing silly acts that laugh Tendi back into her true form. The Redshirts look down on this behavior and throw Boimler out of their club. Boimler then tells the Redshirts that they should be themselves rather than copy the command style of others.
In this episode, when Boimler rejects the makeover that the Redshirts gave him and instead of looking like a commanding officer does something the Redshirts deem beneath them, because he knows how to rescue his friend, this can be seen as illustrating what happens when an individual listens to their inner daimon. Further, when Boimler tells the Redshirts that they should be themselves rather than just adopt the command style of others, he extols the virtues of being true to one’s self to them. Boimler learned in this episode to listen to his inner daimon, and because of this he not only saved himself but the life of his friend. A lesson for all of us.
