Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 13: “That Hope is You, Part 2”

Synopsis: The Discovery crew and the DOT-23 drones controlled by Sphere data regain control of the ship.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of what Carl (C. G.) Jung called the union of opposites.

In “That Hope is You, Part 2” the U.S.S. Discovery crew, aided by the DOT-23 drones, endure many obstacles in regaining control of the ship. However, Lt. Commander Paul Stamets is now at Federation Headquarters, so Cleveland (Book) Booker uses his empathic abilities to use the spore drive to return Discovery to the Verubin Nebula to rescue Captain Saru, Dr. Hugh Culber, Adira Tal, and Su’Kal. After Discovery’s triumphant return to Federation Headquarters, Michael Burnham is promoted to the rank of captain.

In this episode, the Discovery crew can be seen as embodying the instincts and emotions of the unconscious, and the DOT-23 drones can be seen as representing the rational conscious ego. Working together they were able to recapture Discovery and then rescue the other crew members and Su’Kal on the wreck of the Khi’eth. This can be analogized to what Jung called the union of opposites, which can occur when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of unconscious material into itself, making the ego stronger and the psyche more whole.
