Synopsis: The U.S.S. Discovery travels to Dannos V to try to heal the ailing Emperor Georgiou.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of how what Carl (C. G.) Jung called individuation is a goal and never truly reached in a person’s lifetime.
In “Terra Firma, Part 1,” the sphere data informs the U.S.S. Discovery crew that the only possible way to save the life of the Terran Emperor Phillipa Georgiou is on the planet Dannus V. When the ship arrives there, Georgiou and Commander Michael Burnham beam down to the planet and are met by a human looking individual who calls himself Carl, who is sitting reading a newspaper next to a wooden door. Carl tells Georgiou that the only way to avoid a horrible terrible death is to step through the door. Georgiou does so and finds herself in the Terran Universe where the Terran Captain Sylvia Tilly greets her. Soon thereafter she is seen showing mercy to a Terran Kelpien, which is questioned. Then Georgiou attends a theatrical presentation of her career, during which Terran Paul Stamets tries to kill her. Georgiou stabs him instead. Later, Georgiou confronts Terran Captain Michael Burnham, who admits to having taken part in a coup.
In “Terra Firma, Part 2” Terran Burnham is put in an agonizer and tortured until she appears to have regained her loyalty to Georgiou. However, later Georgiou and Terran Burnham engage in a knife fight, which proves fatal to both. Georgiou passes out and then finds herself back on Dannus V, where only a few moments have passed. Carl reveals himself to be the Guardian of Forever, and the wooden door turns into the time travel vortex seen before in an episode of the Star Trek: The Original Series and in another episode in Star Trek: The Animated Series. Carl tells Georgiou that going back to the Terran Universe was a test to see if she would have done anything differently. He says that she passed, because in several instances she choose peace instead of war. He offers her the opportunity to go back through the vortex to another time in place where the Terran Universe is still aligned with the Prime Universe, so she will not die.
In these episodes, when Georgiou goes back to the Terran Universe and finds that she has been changed and acts differently, this can be seen as an illustration of individuation, which includes the union of opposites, how the conscious ego engages with the unconscious to transform and create a union that incorporates and embodies both. This is what happened to Georgiou when she traveled to the Prime Universe, which she discovered when she traveled back to the Terran Universe. Georgiou did not lost her instincts, instead, they were integrated into her ego and made her more whole. This is what can happens when we too set on this path. When we move toward individuation we never lose our instincts, we acknowledge them and integrate them into the ego to make it stronger and the psyche more whole.
