Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 7: “Unification III”

Synopsis: Admiral Vance sends Commander Burham to Ni’Var, the planet formerly known as Vulcan.

This episode can also be seen as an illustration of what Carl (C. G.) Jung called the union of opposites, when the conscious ego acknowledges bits of unconscious material and integrates them into itself.

In “Unification III,” Commander Michael Burnham and Ensign Syliva Tilly believe that they have proof that the Burn had a starting point, but that they need more information to narrow down exactly where. Burnham tells Tilly about an experiment she came across in Federation database called SB-19, that was scanning space at the time the Burn occurred, but that there was no record of any findings. Burnham decides to ask Admiral Charles Vance if he has access to it. Vance tells Burnham that SB-19 data is held by a former Federation world, Ni’Var, which she knows by its older name, Vulcan. Vance explains to Burnham and Captain Saru that Ni’Var is now home to both Vulcans and Romulans, that the work initiated by Ambassador Spock has come to fruition. He also tells them that Ni’Var has not shared the SB-19 data because they believe that the Federation led them to cause the Burn. Burnham goes to Ni’Var and is welcomed as the sister of Ambassador Spock. However, when she is greeted by President T’Rina, she is told that the information will not be made available to her. To prove she can be trusted, Burnham then invokes an ancient Vulcan right to truth seeking, the T’Kal-in-ket, where her mother, Gabrielle Burnham, who is now a sister with the Qowat Milat, will serve as her advocate. As part of her duties Sister Gabrielle forces Burnham to reveal her inner conflicts, and when Burnham finally does, Sister Gabrielle tells the assembled Quorum that now she is speaking the truth. However, when the Quorum members begin to argue, Burnham withdraws the T’Kal-in-ket in an effort to preserve the unity between the Romulans and the Vulcans that Spock had instilled in them. T’Rina, who was listening to the proceedings, gives Burnham the data on her own authority.

In this episode, when Burnham arrives on Ni’Var she is on a mission to retrieve the SB-19 data and is unaware what it will cost her personally to obtain it. She does not willingly reveal her own inner conflict to the Quorum, but when she does, she may not have convinced them of her motivations for requesting the data, but she did convince T’Rina. T’Rina, in recognizing the Burnham’s truthfulness of Burnham’s emotions, can be compared to when the conscious ego acknowledges bits of unconscious material that come into its purview and then integrates them into itself, making the ego stronger and the psyche more whole.
