Synopsis: Retired Admiral Picard and Dr. Asha arrive on the La Sirena.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of how the psyche is made more whole when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of unconscious material into itself.
“Broken Pieces” begins with a flashback to a meeting of the Zhat Vash who talk about a “riddle of the eightfold stars,” of the Admonition their foremothers endured, and how they were born to prevent a second coming of The Destroyer, Seb-Cheneb (Chabon & Vrvilo, 2020). On the Artifact, Seven of Nine comes to aid Elnor and the xBs from the Romulans that want to kill them all, which requires that she rejoin the collective temporarily. Meanwhile, on the La Sirena, Captain Cristóbal Rios delves into a deep depression after Retired Admiral Jean-Luc Picard and Dr. Soji Asha beam back aboard the ship. Rios sees Asha the face of a passenger that was killed on a Starfleet vessel, the USS Ibn Majid, by his former captain, Alonzo Vandermeer. Rios falls into a drunken depression as he relives the event.
In this episode, Starfleet can be seen as an embodiment of the rational conscious ego and the Zhat Vash can be compared to the irrational unconscious. They have completely different motivations and ways of acting, and hold contempt for each other. On the other hand, Seven of Nine, who was a Starfleet officer, a Borg, and now a Fenris Ranger, can be seen as a bridge between opposite worldviews, and is more successful in her endeavors. This can be compared to how when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of unconscious material into itself, it becomes stronger and the psyche more whole.
