Star Trek: Picard – Season 1, Episode 5: “Stardust City Rag”

Synopsis: Retired Admiral Picard and the crew of the La Sirena arrive at Freecloud and find Dr. Maddox.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of what can happen when the rational conscious ego suppresses irrational elements of the unconscious.

In “Stardust City Rag” Retired Admiral Jean-Luc Picard and the La Sirena crew arrive at Freecloud; Picard being unaware that several members of the crew have scores to settle on this planet. When it is learned that Dr. Bruce Maddox is being held in Stardust City on Freecloud by a woman named Bjayzl a plan is put in motion to rescue him. Unbeknownst to Picard, Seven of Nine, aka Annika Hansen, seeks revenge on Bjayzl because of how she stripped parts from Lt. Ichab, a former Borg that Seven of Nine thought of as a son. Seven of Nine ends up killing Bjayzl. Meanwhile, former Lt. Commander Raffi Musiker tries to reunite with her son who lives on Freecloud, but he is unwilling to forgive her past behavior. Maddox is eventually brought aboard La Sirena, but instead of giving him the medical attention he needs, Dr. Agnes Jurati, who had a prior relationship with Maddox, kills him.

In this episode, Seven of Nine and Jurati kill former lovers because of what they have done in the name of commerce or science. Musiker is spurned by her son that wants nothing to do with her because Musiker followed her inner daimon. A daimon that told her that nothing was as she was told it was. In Seven of Nine and Jurati’s cases their actions can be interpreted as being the outcome of when bits of unconscious material are suppressed by the conscious ego until something causes them to erupt violently. What is happening between Musiker and her son, on the other hand, can be compared to being in the throes of the conscious ego suppressing the irrational intuition of the unconscious. But whether the unconscious is responding to being suppressed in the past or currently, it will at some point make itself known to the ego. If when this happens the ego stops suppressing these bits of unconscious material and instead acknowledges and integrates them into itself, change is possible to make the ego stronger and the psyche more whole.
