Synopsis: On Discovery Commander Burnham faces her relationship to her brother while in the Klingon Empire L’Rell is forced to recognize what she must sacrifice for her people.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of the need for the rational conscious ego to acknowledge and integrate bits of unconscious material into itself.
In “Point of Light” Commander Michael Burnham’s adoptive mother Amada Grayson, comes aboard Discovery after having stolen Spock’s medical file. Initially, Captain Christopher Pike tells her they cannot open it, but after he contacts Starbase Five and is told that Spock is missing and accused of murder, he changes his mind. Meanwhile, in the Klingon Empire, L’Rell’s rule is challenged by her relationship with Voq and the revelation that they have a son. Emperor Philippa Georgiou, saves them from certain death, and introduces herself as a security consultant to Starfleet – which is very concerned about keeping L’Rell in power. L’Rell produces what appears to be the severed heads of Voq and her baby and tells the Klingon houses that she is more than their chancellor, that they should call her by a more powerful name, “mother” (Colville & Osunsami, 2019).
In this episode, on Discovery, the rational conscious ego can be seen as embodied in Burnham and Pike and the irrational unconscious in Grayson. Burnham and Pike wanting to act in accordance with Starfleet regulations and Grayson having stolen her son’s medical records to bypass these same regulations. However, once Pike contacts Starfleet and understands that their rules are standing in the way of Spock’s rights, he accepts that other means need to be used to result in a fair outcome. This is echoed in the scenes in the Klingon Empire, where L’Rell must also act contrary to her true nature and deceive her followers into thinking that she has killed Voq and their son. These situations can be analogized to when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of unconscious material into itself to become stronger and the psyche more whole. The bits of unconscious material here being associated with those of mother.
