Star Trek: Discovery Season 1, Episode 8: “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum”

Synopsis: The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery are sent to the planet Pahvo to find a way to penetrate Klingon cloaking technology.

This episode can be seen as another illustration of what can happen when a conscious ego is overwhelmed by unconscious material.

In “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum”Starfleet finds itself losing the war with the Klingon Empire because of the cloaking technology that the Klingon vessels have. The Discovery crew is tasked with traveling to the planet Pahvo, where Starfleet believes a way to penetrate Klingon cloaking technology will be found. Once Discovery arrives at Pahvo, Commander Saru, Lt. Ash Tyler, and Specialist Michael Burnham are sent to the planet to locate the technology. Once there, they discover that sentient life exists there that is indistinguishable from all the other life found on the planet. A sentient lifeform communities with Saru by direct contact with him, almost entering him. This causes Saru to want to shield the Pahvans from Starfleet’s mission instead of obeying his orders. However, the Pahvans are more than able to protect themselves and they send out a subspace message that summons the Klingons to their world.

In this episode, Saru can be interpreted to embody the conscious ego and the Pahvan life forms as the unconscious. When the Pahvan entered Saru can be analogized to when the ego is overwhelmed by unconscious material. This is more likely to happen when the ego is too one-sided and believes that it is the only part of the psyche in control. Making this a cautionary tale.
