Synopsis: Michael Burnham reaches out to Ambassador Sarek when she senses that he is in danger.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of how individuals are all connected by a common collective unconscious.
In “Lethe”Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan is in a shuttle heading to diplomatic mission in the Cancri System when a member of a Vulcan extremist organization sabotages his vessel. On Discovery, Michael Burnham, who shares his katra, or life spirit, senses he is in danger. At Burnham’s request, Captain Gabriel Lorca sends a rescue mission for Sarek. Burnham is able to locate him through their shared katra, and Sarek is brought safely back to Discovery.
In this episode, the katra that Burnham and Sarek share can be compared to what Carl (C.G.) Jung called a collective unconscious, the collective tissue that unites humanity. In his earlier writings, Jung conceptualized the human psyche as being comprised of the conscious, with the ego being at the center of it, and the unconscious. The unconscious contained both a personal unconscious, psychic material unique to every individual, and the collective unconscious, bits of unconscious material common to all humans. Later in his teachings, Jung came to describe the collective unconscious as something, a collective tissue if you will, that we are all a part of. This connective tissue is what is represented here by the katra that Sarek and Burnham share.
