Synopsis: Krall takes revenge against the United Federation of Planets.

This film can be seen as an illustration of what can happen when the conscious ego ignores the capacity of an unconscious complex to gain insight and psychic healing.

In Star Trek Beyond The U.S.S. Enterprise visits the new space station, Yorktown. Shortly after the ship arrives an alien in a space pod, Kalara, is brought to Yorktown. Captain James Tiberius Kirk volunteers the Enterprise to go on a mission to save Kalara’s crew in an uncharted nebula. In the nebula Enterprise is attacked by Krall, who wants an artifact that is on board. Enterprise is destroyed and much of the crew, which has abandoned ship in escape pods, are captured by Krall’s soldiers. Chief Engineer Montgomery (Scotty) Scott lands his pod and is immediately aided by Jaylah, a female alien who lives in the one hundred year old Starfleet vessel, the U.S.S. Franklin. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. Leonard (Bones) McCoy, and Ensign Pavel Andreievich Chekov also find their way to the Franklin. Meanwhile, the artifact recovered by Krall allowed him to recreate a deadly bioweapon that he plans to use on Yorktown and then all Federation planets. Krall was the captain of the Franklin, Balthazar Edison. Krall feels that the Federation abandoned him, and has exploited some sort of alien longevity process to stay alive, so that he can seek vengeance on it. Krall and his forces reach the Yorktown, but they are defeated and Krall is killed by his own bioweapon.

In this film, the crew of Enterprise, Starfleet Command, and the United Federation of Planets can be compared to the collective unconscious, in that they are all collective entities relying on a group of individuals. Conversely, Krall, who believes that unity is a weakness, can be seen as symbolizing the conscious ego that thinks that it does not need anything else in order to succeed. And while Krall does have some insight into the nature of conflict, and how it is necessary for an individual to learn who one is, the pain of being left abandoned by Starfleet, which created a complex, he does not use to try to heal, but instead seeks vengeance, and is defeated. This is a cautionary tale of what can happen when the conscious ego refuses to acknowledge and integrate bits of unconscious material into itself to become stronger and the psyche more whole.
