Released: 6 April 2009

Synopsis: In this reboot, we follow the various origin stories of the crew that came to serve together aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

This film can be seen as a variety of illustrations of what Archetypal Psychologist James Hillman would call the acorn theory, the idea that just as an acorn has everything inside it to become an oak tree, we all have inner daimons with all the information we need to become who we are, as well as his concept of how the different archetypal patterns of energy contained in each individual’s psyche work together as a whole.

In Star Trek (2009) we first witness the birth of James Tiberius Kirk, just as an enormous Romulan ship destroys the U.S.S. Kelvin, of which his father was now in command. We then follow his route to become a cadet at Starfleet Academy. We then witness how Mr. Spock decided to join Starfleet. We also learn why Dr. Leonard (Bones) McCoy joined and how he got his nickname. Then we see these, and other Starfleet cadets placed into action alongside other crew members, each working in an area where they have special innate talents, in order to save Starfleet from destruction by the Romulan, Nero.

In Star Trek (2009) the origin stories of the various crew members, highlighting their special talents, can be seen as illustrating Hillman’s acorn theory, and what can happen when an individual listens to their inner daimon, that presence inside each of us that knows what we were meant to do if we only listen to it. That when all these skillful individuals found their own place on the ship and meshed to create the crew that was able to do almost impossible things, can be seen as elucidating Hillman’s concepts concerning the complementary archetypal powers found in our psyches, and how when they were balanced, how the psyche can become stronger and more whole.
