Star Trek: Enterprise Season 4, Episode 20: “Demons”

Synopsis: A xenophobic organization tries to disrupt the creation of a new collation of planets.

One way to interpret this episode is as an illustration of the tension between two archetypal powers found in one’s psyche, that of the Senex, or wise elder seeking to maintain the status quo, and of the Puer, or eternal youth seeking change. James Hillman believed that the relationship between these two types of energy could be used to explain the complementary positions between various archetypes found in a human psyche.

In “Demons,” Minister Nathan Samuels of Earth is about to convene a meeting to create an alliance of governments from a group of different planets. Meanwhile, a xenophobic organization, Terra Prime, led by human John Fredrick Paxton, plans to interrupt the proceedings with a message of the threat to humans when aliens are allowed to stay on Earth. As part of his plot to destroy Starfleet Command, he has DNA taken from Enterprise of Command T’Pol and Commander Charles (Trip) Tucker III and creates a half-human half-Vulcan clone. He calls the baby a symbol of the dangers to humanity. T’Pol and Trip go to try to find the infant girl.

In this episode, the xenophobic views of Paxton and Terra Prime can be seen as representing the shadow side of Senex energy, the traits of being fixed in one’s ways and unopen to new things. The coalition of planets that is being created can be seen as symbolizing Puer energy, here the attribute of inviting new ideas and change. Many times the tension between these two opposite ideals can be difficult to hold in one’s psyche. Just as there is fierce opposition to the different viewpoints in this episode. If however, one is able to make room for both opposites in one’s psyche, then the psyche will become more whole.
