Star Trek: Enterprise Season 4, Episode 14: “The Aenar”

Synopsis: Captain Archer and Commander Shran travel to Andoria to investigate a possible link between the Andorian subspecies Aenar and the drone ship that has been attacking other species.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of what is possible when the Logos-driven rational conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of the Eros-driven irrational unconscious into itself.

In “The Aenar” after learning that the ship that has been attacking other vessels is a drone, Commander T’Pol tells Captain Jonathan Archer and Commander Shran that the pilot who operates it must be someone with telepathic abilities, perhaps an Andorian. Shran then tells Archer about a subspecies of blind, telepathic, ice-dwelling, Andorians called the Aenar, but also tells him that they are pacifists. Enterprise travels to Andoria, and whiles she is in orbit, T’Pol and Commander Charles (Trip) Tucker III create a device that they believe will be able to intercept the telepathic control of the drones. Archer and Shran go to the surface and locate the Aenars. Shran is wounded and taken to an Aenar hospital where they meet Jhamel, the sister of  Gareb, an Aenar who was taken from the planet a year earlier. Jhamel tells Shran that she has had nightmares about her brother being kept somewhere against his will. She agrees to help locate her brother and returns to Enterprise with Archer and Shran. Meanwhile, on Romulus, although Gareb is in failing health, the admiral orders two drone ships be launched to destroy Enterprise. On Enterprise, Jhamel is able to use the device to telepathically reach out to her brother, and is able to make the two drones fire on each other instead of Enterprise. The drones are destroyed but Gareb collapses from the strain. Shran and Jhamel return to Andoria together, but before they go, Shran and Archer apologize to each other and shake hands.

In this episode, the two different societies that inhabit Andoria, the Aenars and the Andorians, can be analogized to the conscious ego and unconscious parts of the psyche. The Andorians, known for being aggressive, representing the conscious ego, with the telepathic and pacifist Aenars, the unconscious. When Shran realized that he needed the help of the Aenars, and went to ask for it, he allowed Jhamel to reconnect with her brother. Jhamel’s telepathic ability allowed her to save the Enterprise. This can be compared to how when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of unconscious material into itself, to make it stronger and the psyche more whole.
