Star Trek: Enterprise Season 4, Episode 12: “Babel One”

Synopsis: Enterprise is taking a Tellurite ambassador to peace talks to be held on Babel when a distress call from Commander Shran of Andoria is received.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of archetypal Trickster energy.

In “Babel One” Enterprise is tasked with providing transportation for the Tellurite ambassador through Andorian space for peace talks to take place on Babel. The talks are being held in hopes the Tellurites and Andorians will be able to put a halt to hostilities toward each other. En route, Enterprise receives a distress signal from Commander Shran, who’s ship has been destroyed in an attack that appears to be from a Tellurite ship. After Shran and his remaining crew are brought aboard, Enterprise is attacked by a ship that appears to be Andorian. In reality, the alien vessel is a robot Romulan ship that has been equipped with a device that allows it to masquerade as any vessel the Romulans program it to do.

In this episode, the Romulan robot ship that can appear as any type of vessel can be compared to a Trickster character. Trickster energy can be changing and sometimes deceiving, as is the case here. But Trickster energy is also able to be a catalyst for change, sometimes when other ways have been unsuccessful, precisely because it is so unexpected, and catches one’s conscious ego off guard. This can create an opening for change to take place. Change that will make the ego to become stronger and the psyche more whole.
