Synopsis: Captain Archer convinces the Aquatics to join the Primates and Arboreals in trying to stop the Reptilians and Insectoids from deploying the weapon to annihilate Earth while the Reptilians receive assistance from the Sphere Builders.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of the difficulty the Logos-driven rational conscious ego has when it is overwhelmed by material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious, or when it identifies too closely with the god-like power of an unconscious archetype.
In “Countdown,” Captain Jonathan Archer, along with the Primates and the Arboreals, ask the Aquatics for help to stop the Reptilians and Insectoids from deploying the weapon that will annihilate Earth. At first the Aquatics are hesitant, feeling that because the command codes of three of the five Xindi species are required to arm the weapon, there is time to deliberate further. However, when the Reptilians, who abducted Ensign Hoshi Sato in the last episode, “The Council,” force her to decode the Aquatic command codes, they come to join the others in their efforts to try to defeat it. Meanwhile, the Sphere Builders decide that in order for the Reptilians to be triumphant, they must intervene, and they do so by placing a large anomaly field between the weapon and Enterprise and her crew’s allies. When the Insectoids start to have second thoughts about annihilating Earth, the Reptilians destroy their ships. Archer takes a team aboard Degra’s ship to try to intercept the weapon, but when they arrive where they thought it would be, it has already left the Expanse for Earth.
In this episode, the Sphere Builders, or Guardians as the Xindi call them, can be seen as inhabiting the irrational unconscious, here symbolized by the transdimensional anomalies that they are creating in space, while the Xindi Species and the crew of the Enterprise can be analogized to representing the rational conscious ego, that is being overwhelmed by too much unconscious material coming into its purview. The Reptilians on the other hand, aided by the immense power of the Sphere Builders, can be seen as embodying a conscious ego that has identified too closely with the god-like power of an unconscious archetype. However, once an ego becomes inflated, it will then become deflated. We will see in the next episode if the deflation occurs in time for Archer and his allies to defeat the Reptilians.
