Synopsis: Captain Archer and Sub-Commander T’Pol go back in time to 2004 Earth, in an effort to return Xindi time travelers back to their own time.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of how a complex can begin the process whereby the Logos-driven rational conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious into itself.
In “Carpenter Street,” Temporal Agent Daniels appears to Captain Jonathan Archer to tell him that two months prior three Xindi operatives traveled back in time to Earth in 2004 to work on a biological weapon to bring back to the present time. He tells Archer that he needs to go back in time to retrieve both the time traveling Xindi and any devices that do not belong in 2004. Archer, accompanied by Sub-Commander T’Pol do just this. They locate the Xindi and the weapon they are working on, and although it is not without a struggle, tag anything that does not belong in 2004 with a device that will allow them to bring them back to the correct time period.
In this episode, the arrival of Daniels can be seen as analogous to when a complex occurs to alert the conscious ego that there is something that needs attention. When Archer and T’Pol go back in time to collect the Xindis and their technology to bring back to their original chronological time, this can be compared to the conscious ego acknowledging and integrating bits of unconscious material into itself.
