Star Trek: Enterprise Season 3, Episode 8: “Twilight”

Synopsis: Captain Archer is infected with parasites that live outside of time.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of Jung’s concept of Trickster energy, that can change forms or seem different from what it truly is, but if nothing else, is an instrument of change.

In “Twilight,” Captain Jonathan Archer is caught in an anomaly while trying to save Sub-Commander T’Pol. In the anomaly Archer is infected with parasites that live outside of time and cause him to be unable to create new memories. This causes the creation of a new timeline in which Admiral Forrest relieves him of command and Enterprise is too late in finding the Xindi weapon, and Earth is destroyed. Twelve years in the future in this new timeline, Dr. Phlox finds a way to rid Archer of the parasites, and the original timeline is restored.

In this episode, the parasites that exist outside of time and then infect Archer can be seen as exhibiting the traits of Trickster energy. Trickster energy is often a catalyst for change, for better or worse, as it was here. When the Trickster energy departs, it tends to end the upheaval that surrounds it. But even after the Trickster leaves, the Trickster never leaves things exactly as they were.
