Synopsis: Sub-Commander T’Pol is the only member of the crew not affected by a strange radiation that Enterprise encounters when she travels to a trinary star system.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of what can happen when the Logos-driven rational conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious into itself.
In “Singularity” Sub-Commander T’Pol informs Captain Jonathan Archer that sensors have located a trinary system near a black hole. Enterprise goes to explore it, but as soon as the ship gets near the trinary system the crew begins to exhibit behavior that is not normal. T’Pol comes to see Archer and he throws her out. T’Pol then goes to sickbay to speak with Dr. Phlox, and she needs to give him a Vulcan nerve pinch to stop him from performing unnecessary brain surgery on Ensign Travis Mayweather. At this point T’Pol realizes that the rest of the crew is exhibiting obsessive behavior. Then the crew, with the exception of T’Pol, falls unconscious. T’Pol then becomes a bit desperate and wakes up Archer by putting him in a cold shower. She tells him that he needs to pilot Enterprise out of this region of space through a debris field while she gives him the course corrections to avoid the debris. Together they do it and Enterprise is saved.
In this episode, when T’Pol wakes up Archer because she knows that she can not get Enterprise to safety alone, this can be compared to when the conscious ego acknowledges that the psyche also contains the unconscious. When T’Pol wakes up Archer so that together the two of them can get Enterprise to safety, this can be analogized to when the conscious ego integrates bits of unconscious material into itself, and in the process becomes stronger and makes the psyche more whole.
