Star Trek: Enterprise Season 2, Episode 7: “The Seventh”

Blog 654 – Season 2, Episode 7: “The Seventh”

Synopsis: Sub-Commander T’Pol asks Captain Archer to assist her on a secret mission she has been sent on by the Vulcan High Command.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of how a complex can help the Logos-driven rational conscious ego acknowledge and integrate bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious.

In “The Seventh” Sub-Commander T’Pol is contacted by the Vulcan High Command and sent on a secret mission to complete an assignment to apprehend a Vulcan spy she was given years ago from the Vulcan Ministry of Security. She asks Captain Jonathan Archer to accompany her because she knows the mission will be difficult for her to complete alone and she needs the assistance of someone she can trust. While on the mission Menos is found and captured, but then he speaks to T’Pol and causes her to remember her killing another spy. A memory that she had suppressed using an ancient Vulcan ritual. T’Pol is overwhelmed by the emotions that come back with the memory and starts doubting whether what she is doing is right or if she should believe what Menos is telling her. This is when Archer is there to tell her she is doing the right thing, and in the end, we find out that Menos was indeed lying to her.

In this episode, when T’Pol is forced to relive memories which she had suppressed and becomes overwhelmed, this can be compared to when the conscious ego experiences bits of unconscious material through a complex. But just as in the last episode, here when T’Pol shared what is going on with Archer, facing it, this can be analogized to how a complex can start the process of the Logos-driven rational conscious ego becoming aware of bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious. In a psyche this will lead to the ego integrating these bits of unconscious material into itself to become stronger and make the psyche more whole.
