Synopsis: A group of Ferengi thieves try to loot Enterprise.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of how when the Logos-driven rational conscious ego incorporates bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious, it makes the ego stronger and the psyche more whole.
In “Acquisition” Enterprise’s crew inadvertently beams up an object that emits a gas that knocks them unconscious. This is a ploy used by a group of Ferengi thieves in order to raid Enterprise. However, Commander Charles (Trip) Tucker was in the decontamination chamber at the time and was not affected. Meanwhile, the Ferengi that boarded the ship revive Captain Jonathan Archer, so that he will give them the location of the vault. Archer initially tells them that there is no vault, but then sensing that they will not believe it, he tells them that he will lead them to it for a cut of the profits. Archer then becomes aware that Tucker is awake and tells him to revive Sub-Commander T’Pol. Archer, Tucker, and T’Pol together then hatch a plan to trap the Ferengi using their own greed against them.
In this episode, similar to the earlier episode, “Sleeping Dogs,” in which Archer decided to think like a Klingon, here Archer is trying to put himself in the mindset of the Ferengi. And just as in the prior situation, when Archer makes an effort to try to understand the universe from an alien point of view, this can be compared to when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of material from the unconscious into itself, which will make the ego stronger and the psyche more whole.
