Synopsis: While exploring a gas giant Enterprise encounters a shipwrecked alien vessel and tries to render aid.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of what can happen when the Logos-driven rational conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious.
In “Sleeping Dogs” Enterprise comes near a Class 9 Gas Giant Planet and sets out to explore it. A probe is sent out and a shipwrecked vessel is detected. An away team consisting of Sub Commander T’Pol, Lt. Malcolm Reed, and Ensign Hoshi Sato is sent out to investigate. The three reach the shipwreck and Sato immediately knows it is Klingon, because she can read the language. Once aboard, they discover the Klingon crew is alive but unconscious, and Captain Jonathan Archer orders them to try to help them. However, one crewmember, a female named Bu’Kah, attacks the three and takes their pod to alert Klingon forces that Starfleet has attacked them. The pod is recovered by Enterprise’s grappling hooks and once aboard Enterprise Bu’Kah tells them that the Klingons will come and destroy them. Commander Charles (Trip) Tucker tells Archer that he needs to start thinking like a Klingon. Trapped on the Klingon vessel, T’Pol, Reed, and Sato are forced to try to get the engines running to avert being crushed by the dense atmosphere of the gas giant. Meanwhile, Archer, now familiar with the Klingon mindset, convinces Bu’Kah to help repair the Klingon ship. That accomplished, Archer returns to Enterprise only to face two incoming Klingon vessels ordering him to surrender. Archer now knowing how the Klingons perceive the world, says no in a way they will understand.
In this episode, Archer finally realized that not all the species Enterprise will encounter will be coming from the same frame of mind as he does. When he makes an effort to try to understand the universe from a Klingon point of view, this can be compared to when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of material from the unconscious into itself. In the process this will make the ego stronger and the psyche more whole.
