Synopsis: The Enterprise encounters a group of aliens on a pilgrimage, one of which is the disguised Suliban, Silik.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of just how vast the Eros-driven irrational unconscious is compared to what the psyche’s Logos-driven rational conscious ego can perceive.
In “Cold Front” Enterprise encounters a ship that is taking pilgrims to witness the Great Plum of Agosoria, a stellar event considered sacred that occurs every eleven years when a protostar emits a neutron blast. Captain Jonathan Archer invites the pilgrims aboard Enterprise to view the event, not realizing that one of them is the Suliban, Silik disguised as one of them. Meanwhile, a crewmember, Daniels, reveals to Archer that he is really an agent from 900 years in the future, investigating the actions of the shadowy entity that Silik reports to, who is from 400 years in the future and whose actions are part of the Temporal Cold War. Silik kills Daniels and escapes from Enterprise, but he does not obtain the temporal observatory that was in Daniels’ possession and that the shadowy figure sent him to Enterprise to collect. Afterward, Archer seals Daniels’ quarters.
In this episode, when Archer learns about the Temporal Cold War that will occur centuries in the future, and the almost unimaginable implications, this can be compared to when the conscious ego realizes just how little it can perceive of the psyche compared to the vastness of the unconscious. And just as Archer locks away any equipment that Daniels’ might have left behind in his quarters, one reaction of the conscious ego when faced with this situation, is to suppress the bits of material from the unconscious that it has no control over. At least for the time being.
