Synopsis: Seven of Nine revives an alien in a bio-pod with unexpected results.

Similar to the last episode, “Riddles,” this episode can be seen as an illustration of the unexpected results that can arise when the Logos-driven rational conscious ego becomes aware of bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious. Here, the unconscious material is brough to the attention of the conscious ego through what Carl (C. G.) Jung called a complex. He wrote that a complex was created by a psychic wound that has been suppressed by the ego into the unconscious, but when acknowledged can be an opportunity for psychic healing and growth.

In “Dragon’s Teeth” Voyager is pulled into a subspace corridor and then hailed by an alien vessel that the corridor, which they call under-space, belongs to them, the Turei. The Turei ship helps Voyager out of the corridor but then wants to board her to destroy the memory of them. To avoid this, Voyager seeks refuge on an alien planet. Voyager’s sensors indicate that the planet was bombarded 892 years before and also detects life signs. An away team of Captain Kathryn Janeway, Lt. Commander Tuvok, and Seven of Nine go to find them. Seven finds a bio-pod and impulsively revives the occupant. The newly revived Gedrin is a Vaadwaur. He tells the away team that the subspace corridors belonged to his species, and he wants to trade knowledge of how to travel through the corridors in exchange for getting those who remain in bio-pods on this planet off this world and onto another. Both Janeway and Seven feel the urge to help Gedrin and his people. Seven acknowledges that as a Borg she destroyed so many civilizations she would like to help save one. Once aboard Voyager, Gedrin is introduced to Mr. Neelix. He referred to Neelix’s species using language from 900 years earlier. This prompts Neelix to do some research on the Vaadwaur. Neelix discovers that instead of being the victim, the Vaadwaur were the aggressors in the long ago war. Meanwhile, once revived, some of the Vaadwaur want to take over Voyager. Once the Vaadwaurs true motives come to light, Janeway hails the Turei to let them know they have a common enemy and leaves the Vaadwaur survivors to face their fate.

In this episode, when Seven impulsively revives Gedrin, the normally rational former Borg is responding to bits of material from her unconscious, brought to the attention of her conscious ego through a complex. Her wanting to help Gedrin recover his civilization created by the psychic wound she experienced by being part of the cause of so many other civilizations being destroyed when they were assimilated while she was a Borg. Seven admits this much to Janeway at the end of the episode. And while there were very unexpected outcomes from this urge, Seven and Voyager do survive and Seven has become more whole. This can be analogized to how when acknowledging our own complexes can be painful, in the end doing so will make the conscious ego stronger and the psyche more whole.
