Synopsis: Relationships change between General Martok and Chancellor Gowron of the Klingon Empire, between Kai Winn and the alleged Anjohl Tennan on Bajor, and between Dr. Bashir and Starfleet’s Section 31.

This episode can be seen as illustrations of how the Logos-driven rational conscious ego and the Eros-driven irrational unconscious have different ways of operating.

In “When it Rains . . .” Chancellor Gowron comes to Deep Space Nine to bestow upon General Martok the honor of being inducted into the Order of Kahless, and as soon as the rite is completed, tells Martok that he is taking direct command of Klingon forces. While on Bajor, Kai Winn now knows that Anjohl Tennan is the Cardassian, Dukat. When he secretly tries to open the sacred text which Winn has told him is for her eyes only, he is blinded. Winn, feeling betrayed throws him out. And on Deep Space Nine, Dr. Julian Bashir learns that Starfleet’s covert agency, Section 31, infected Security Chief Odo with the virus that is now threatening the lives of every Founder.

In this episode, the relationships above illustrate how the irrational unconscious has a different way of operating than the rational conscious ego. Martok and Lt. Commander Worf have always served the Klingon Empire with integrity and honor, the traits their rational egos hold most high. Meanwhile, Gowron does an end run around Martok, trying to flatter his ego, and then taking from him his command in a way that seems dubious to honor at best. On Bajor, the Pah-wraiths blind Anjohl (Dukat) and Winn throws him on the street, when he engages in activity that is not in line with her ego’s idea of how he should behave. And on Deep Space Nine, Bashir learns of the further duplicity of Section 31, which went against all stated Starfleet ideals by creating a virus to wipe out an entire species. These can all be analogized to how the unconscious acts in opposition to the conscious ego. However, as likely will be illustrated in the episodes to come, when the traits of the unconscious are acknowledged and integrated into the conscious ego, it becomes more flexible and stronger, and the psyche more whole.
