Synopsis: Photonic life forms take characters in a holodeck program as real.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of how different the Eros-driven irrational unconscious processes information from the Logos-driven rational conscious ego, which is why it can be difficult for the conscious ego to incorporate bits of unconscious material into itself, in what Carl (C. G.) Jung called individuation, the process by which a psyche becomes more whole.
In “The Bride of Chaotica!” Voyager is boarded by trans-dimensional alien beings who are a species of photonic life form. Therefore, the holographic characters in the holodeck are real to them and the crew, who are carbon based lifeforms, are not. Captain Kathryn Janeway first sends The Doctor, another photonic life form, into the holodeck program to try to communicate with them. When this proves insufficient, Janeway goes into the holodeck program herself, posing as Arachnia, the bride to be of Dr. Chaotica, in order to end Chaotica’s attack on the aliens.
In this episode the alien photonic life forms, as well as the holodeck, can be seen as aspects of the unconscious, and Janeway and the crew, can be seen as images of the conscious ego. To Janeway and the crew, the photonic life forms are alien, the holodeck, a fantasy. To the photonic life forms, what happens in the holodeck is real life and the crew and Janeway are fantasy. This can be analogized to how different the perspectives are from the conscious ego, and what the conscious ego can imagine, since it cannot be truly know, of the unconscious. The analogy can be further extended to likening the holodeck program and characters as representing a complex. Here identifying a complex as one of the ways that bits of unconscious material can come into the awareness of the ego. By working with the characters in the holodeck program, Janeway is able to end the war going on in there, much like how when the ego acknowledges and integrates bits of the unconscious material from a complex into itself, it can become stronger and the psyche more whole.
